5 Things to do When You’re Feeling Overwhelmed

I have no idea what is in the air. If it’s Mercury being in retrograde. (For those who don’t know what that means, it’s when Mercury travels backward in the sky, and it’s often a time of confusion, frustration, and other high emotions.) If it’s the fact that the pandemic has turned the world into utter chaos. Or if it’s the fact that life is generally overwhelming, and it can be tough to grasp at times. Sometimes what’s best is to take a step back and breathe.

Go for a walk.

They say that exercise helps reduce stress and help your mood. That doesn’t mean you have to run five miles or lift heavy weights at the gym for hours. The easiest form of exercise is walking. Go for a walk and do it for however long you like. Put on your favorite music or podcast and try to forget about everything that’s been weighing you down.

Put on your favorite show.

Your favorite show can be a significant source of comfort. It can make you laugh or cry and help you escape reality. My personal favorites are either Friends or New Girl. I know some like to bash on Friends, but I can’t help it. It’s mindless television and helps me forget what I was stressing over.

Read a good book.

One of my favorite pastimes is to curl up and read a good book. I like reading books that help escape reality and make me feel as though I am a part of the story. It’s easy to lose focus on reality and an excellent way to end the day. If you have any good book recommendations feel free to let me know.

Journal.

Writing down how you’re feeling is a common practice to help with your emotions. It’s hard to vocalize how we feel to other people. Instead, it can be a lot easier to write how were feeling and look back at those thoughts later.

Cry it out

Sometimes the best way to feel better is to just cry it out. Crying makes us at our most vulnerable, but at the same time, it can help lift some weight off our shoulders.

I know ways to cope and feel better are different for everyone. This might work for some but not for others. Just remember that you’re doing your best, and that’s all that matters.
